This Week: Songs You Need To Hear
Jorge da Rocha; p/c Pedro Vidal
The outpour of quality music all across the world continues—and never fails to amaze. In these troubling times, there’s still beauty and art to be discovered and enjoyed. While we wish we could share all of the gems we receive on a weekly basis, we’ve narrowed down to five new songs to add to your personal rotations:
I. “What A Wonderful World” by Jorge da Rocha
Jorge da Rocha
Jorge da Rocha is a Portuguese musician by way of Barcelona, Spain. His newly released cover of the classic we all know and love is what he describes as “an ironic interpretation, inviting the listener to think about the world we live in.” And the song delivers on that to the fullest degree. It’s dark, it’s beautiful, and it’s even frightening at times. Relatable, to say the very least.
II. “Fully Tickled Pink” by M.E. Netzke
M.E. Netzke
Next on our ride, we turn the corner with a new song from M.E. Netzke that’s bursting at the seams with good vibes and self-examination wrapped in an uplifting musical jacket. The Canadian songwriter says the song is about “feeling unsettled”, but after hearing the song I felt settled right in.
III. “Ocean Eyes (Drill Remix)” by JVS
JVS
Now we've fully turned the corner—this remix by JVS will put a pep in your step. The song is layered in spiritual undertones with an instrumental that perfectly matches the sentiment. JVS says it best himself:
“I’ve seen beautiful, I’ve seen ugly, can you feel the pain that I’ve felt? / See the brightness in everything, like God taught me himself.”
IV. “Wedding Ring” by Skinny Dippers
Skinny Dippers
The Brooklyn, NY-based band Skinny Dippers captures a special feeling with their new song “Wedding Ring”. In music, there’s the elusive intangible element that often can’t be described by chord progressions, lyrics or performance—some songs simply have “the magic”. To me, this song is a perfect example of that. Their incredible guitar tones don’t hurt either.
V. “People Like You” by Charissa
Charissa
