Atlanta Troubadour Julianna Money Covers Steve Lacy’s “Dark Red”

Finding inspiration in today’s airwaves, Atlanta troubadour Julianna Money has added her own indie-rock twist to Steve Lacy’s “Dark Red.” The release comes off the heels of Money’s 2020 debut album In the Valley

“I was pretty obsessed with the song for a while after discovering it a couple of years ago,” Money says. “It feels new and classic at the same time.” Money adds to this timeless aspect by meshing R&B with indie-rock, creating something that is simultaneously fresh and familiar.

Money’s rendition of the song takes down the original tempo and introduces new elements such as organ and vibraphone. Nevertheless, the arrangement remains sparse. Drums, vibraphone, bass, and digital ambience all weave in and out, leaving Money’s voice plenty of room to carry the song. It is in her voice where Money feels the most important element of her cover lies.

“I absolutely love the queerness the song takes on when it's sung through my lens. Especially in terms of the lyrical content, it has such a queer longing to it that I feel so deeply and feels really fun to get to share in this way.”
