This Week: Songs You Need To Hear
The air is crisp and cool, and we’ve got the end of the year sneaking up on us. There’s been so much good music sent our way this year, and we continue to do our best to listen to all of it. Here’s a handful of new selections to marinate your October ears. Let’s begin:
I. “In A Lonely Place” by Matt Basile

The moving, melodic feel of this song grabbed me right out the gate. Some songs exude a feeling of being “iconic”—and this song does just that. Matt’s voice soothes the listener as much as it invigorates them. “In A Lonely Place” in an incredibly thought-provoking piece of music, with an incredibly mature feel. I can’t imagine a better piece for the season.
II. “Bad Communicator” by Joshua Kaine

Next we have the new release from Joshua Kaine, “Bad Communicator”. The pure sonic amalgamation of sound is what drew me to this track. It’s smooth enough to be a subtle vibe, but it demands your attention with the tasteful combination of texture. Unlike its title, the song communicates thoroughly and effectively in all the right ways.
III. “Such A Thing As Tupelo” by Swarme of Beese

Next, we take a sonic shift to the beautiful acoustic single “Such A Thing As Tupelo” by Swarme of Beese. Admittedly, I tend to shy away from ultra-slow paced music, more as a matter of personal taste and what I’m usually in the mood for. But when the track comes through the speakers as purely and as intentionally as this one did, you can’t help but take notice and submit to the artist’s journey in the song. The vocal work keeps you engaged, never over-reaching or under-delivering. The song delicately graces the room each time you hit play.
IV. “Won’t Surprise You At All” by Jeff Socia

Staying within the lines of Americana & Country, we have “Won’t Surprise You At All” by Jeff Socia. This is one of those songs, where nothing I could say would come close to telling how well the song comes off in its simplistic, and classic songwriting structure and feel. A lot of times as songwriters, we want to complicate things. But Jeff Socia reminds us that sometimes music is simply about conveying a feeling—and “Won’t Surprise You At All” demonstrates that perfectly. When you hear it, it won’t surprise you at all.
